About the Production

THE DIVINE COMEDY | GUEST PRODUCTION BY THE VASIL DRUMEV DRAMA AND PUPPET THEATRE, SHUMEN
Based on Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy, this production guides the audience through the realms of Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise — a journey that unfolds as much within the human spirit as through the worlds beyond.
The production brings to life Dante’s philosophical legacy, in which human beings confront their destiny, their moral choices, and the possibility of spiritual transcendence. The degrees of sin and virtue, the concept of divine justice, and the soul’s pursuit of perfection remain ever-present, prompting us to question the meaning of existence.
Dante’s encounters with the damned and the blessed become theatrical expressions of human frailty, suffering, and hope, while Beatrice shines as a symbol of divine love and spiritual enlightenment.
Liliya Abadzhieva’s production explores the philosophical depth of the work: its reflections on free will, human responsibility, and the place of knowledge and truth in the life of the spirit. Through Dante’s poetic imagery and metaphysical visions, the production transforms the spiritual realm into a compelling theatrical experience.
The Divine Comedy offers a path towards overcoming chaos, finding inner enlightenment, and discovering the divine order of the world. More than a dramatisation of a literary masterpiece, it is a spiritual journey in which theatre becomes a bridge between humanity and eternity.
