The Land of Smiles is a beautiful classical operetta in three acts and a distinguished part of the repertoire of major national and international musical theatres. Its libretto was created on the basis of Victor Léon’s The Yellow Jacket.
It is a Chinese fairy tale — a parable about the nature of the world, which is sustained above all by love. The story seeks to evoke the feeling of a human journey towards our deepest dreams and aspirations, towards the fears and desires we are born with and experience throughout our lives.
The distinctive character of Lehár’s music prompted Paul Knepler to exclaim:
“There are three kinds of dramatic music — opera, operetta, and Lehár.”
The operetta premiered on 10 October 1929 in Berlin.
In 1938, Franz Lehár himself conducted the premiere performance of the operetta at the Vienna State Opera.
